Vivid Inks Deal for Leapscan’s Camera Phone Bar-Coding Technology

VAN NUYS, Calif. — AEBN’s Leapscan technology has been given the thumbs up by Vivid Entertainment Group, which has signed an eight-month exclusive licensing deal for technology that enables cellphone users to preview films while they shop in adult video stores.

Charlotte, N.C.-based AEBN, known as the Adult Entertainment Broadcast Network, launched its new mobile division Xobile in April.

Xobile’s system utilizes its proprietary Leapscan barcode scanning technology that allows users of most Symbian OS-based and Windows Mobile camera phones to stream videos such as trailers of videos on the camera-equipped mobile devices.

Xobile CEO Harvey Kaplan told XBiz that once software is downloaded by SMS from Xobile.com and other sites, “you just point your cellphone at the package and the 2-D reader interprets the barcode information.”

“You can see a video trailer right then or store it for viewing later,” he said.

Kaplan noted that similar technology has been available for five years in Europe and Asia, but Leapscan is leading efforts in rolling out the technology in the United States.

“It is the most advanced use in the United States of two-dimensional barcode technology,” he said.

Once the eight-month contract with Vivid sunsets, Kaplan said Xobile will offer the technology to more than 850 other adult studios.

In the meantime, Vivid Co-Chairman Steven Hirsch is excited about the technology and what it will do for his company’s brand.

“It takes a matter of seconds, and viewers will be able to tell immediately if they want to purchase a specific video,” he said. “It creates a very personal relationship with our consumer.

“As usual, the adult sector is leading the way in creating new products and services that will invariably be in common use in a few years.”

Xobile and Van Nuys, Calif.-based Vivid will introduce Leapscan technology at Internext in August.
