Motorola Announces Broadband Desktop Wireless Modem for CES

ARLINGTON HTS, Ill.— Motorola, Inc. has announced the CPEi 100, a single data port, 2.5 GHz “plug-and-play” WiMAX device that delivers wireless broadband Internet connectivity. The latest addition to the Motorola portfolio of WiMAX customer premises equipment (CPE), it is designed to sit on a desktop and serve as the interface between a computer and the WiMAX network.

“Performance and ease-of-use are essential to motivate consumers to upgrade to higher performance wireless broadband technologies, “ Fred Wright, Motorola senior vice president, Cellular Networks and Broadband, said. “The CPEi 100 provides that experience and enables WiMAX operators to offer a home device that consumers can install and setup in only a matter of minutes.”

The CPEi 100 is part of Motorola’s portfolio of WiMAX 802.16e CPEs, and is part of the MOTOwi4 family of broadband wireless access products. It should be available in 2008 for WiMAX operators who have systems in the 2.5 GHz band.

A sample unit will be on display at the Motorola booth at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week.

Motorola’s wi4 WiMAX devices support fixed, portable, nomadic and mobile applications. The WiMAX access points, CPEs and mobile WiMAX chipsets under development for use in Motorola’s devices are part of the MOTOwi4 portfolio of solutions that complement and complete wireless broadband networks. Motorola currently has 15 WiMAX contracts and more than 57 WiMAX engagements in 38 countries worldwide, including 44 active trials. Information on Motorola’s global WiMAX activity can be found here.
