Four college students were detained on Oct. 25 and are accused of posting the clip. If convicted, the four could face up to 15 years in jail for “spreading depraved cultural items.” The student's claim that a friend copied the video from Linh’s costar’s computer and then passed it along to other friends who posted it online.
The actress, who starred in “Vang Anh’s Diaries,” made a tearful confession on Vietnamese national TV.
“I made a mistake, a terrible mistake,” Linh told the AP. “I apologize to you, my parents, my teachers and my friends.”
The release of the X-rated footage and its subsequent fallout has become a national scandal in Vietnam. Linh has become the butt of jokes and has been shamed into disgrace, according to reports. Vietnam is a Communist society.
“People will forgive him, but not her,” Tran Minh Nguyet of the Vietnam Women’s Union told the AP. “Vietnamese think it’s OK for a boy to have sex at that age, but not for a girl. It’s absolutely unfair. Vietnam is changing quickly, but there’s no way Thuy Linh will be forgiven. That will take another generation.”
