Facebook Releases Instagram Censorship Data in Latest 'Transparency Report'

MENLO PARK, Calif. — Facebook has just released a document entitled “Transparency Report,” a biannual statement regarding their content moderation and censorship policies. For the first time, the report includes data gathered by their subsidiary Instagram, which also uses the Facebook Community Standards.

The report arrives in the middle of a controversy over a recent change in the company’s policies targeting the sexual use of popular emojis like eggplants, peaches and water drops. XBIZ and BBC journalist Thomas Fabbri broke that story, which has generated international headlines over the "eggplant emoji ban."

The Facebook report includes several graphics purporting to show data reflecting the success of the two companies’ content moderation and censorship practices, which an overwhelming number of sex workers, especially adult performers, say are discriminatory towards them.

This latest report continues Facebook practice of lumping sexual expression or references to lawful sex between consenting adults, both commercial and non-commercial (such as sex dates) with “violations” such as “bullying,” “hate speech” and even “terrorist propaganda.”

XBIZ will continue reporting on Facebook and Instagram’s content moderation and censorship policies as more information about how this “Transparency Report” was prepared becomes available.
