Malaysia Cracks Down on Pirated Porn

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — In order to stem the tide of illegally copied DVDs in Southeast Asia, Malaysian authorities have cracked down on bootleggers, orchestrating raids using canines over the past week. More than a quarter of the 180,000 pirated discs were adult movies.

According to Fahmi Kassim, chief enforcement officer in Malaysia, pirated porn DVDs sell for around 85 cents more than mainstream movies on DVD.

Most of the pirated DVDs found buyers in neighboring Singapore and originated in the U.S., China and Europe. Malaysian officials are worried that bootlegged porn is rising.

“What is disturbing is this growing proof that the piracy syndicates are working with the pornographic industry, especially when the seized items now include child pornography,” Neil Gane, senior operations executive of the Motion Picture Association of America, told the Associated Press.

Lucky and Flo, the Labrador Retrievers used to sniff out the illegal optical discs, were on loan from the MPAA. So far, the dogs have detected 1.3 million pirated DVDs in three Malaysian states.
