DENVER — Beginning tomorrow, it will be against the law in Colorado to post intimate photos of a former lover as a means of revenge or harassment.
Colorado is joining the gradual nationwide push against the relatively new form of cyber harassment — known as revenge porn — and will now charge perpetrators with a misdemeanor offense, punishable with a minimum $10,000 fine.
Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed the statute into law last month, and it will go into effect July 1, along with a slew of other laws approved by the state legislature.
Colorado has become the 11th state to outlaw revenge porn, following behind Hawaii, Arizona, California, New Jersey, New York, Georgia, Idaho, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin, which already have similar laws.
Hawaii, Idaho and Arizona make it a felony for a first violation; the crime is a felony in Georgia and Utah on the second offense.
