Comcast Sees Huge Spike in Video-on-Demand

PHILADELPHIA — More Americans are getting used to the convenience of video-on-demand, as seen by figures released Friday by cable operator Comcast.

The cable giant says orders for its VOD service increased 71 percent in 2005 compared to the previous year.

Without releasing figures for its adult programming, Comcast reported more than $184 million video-on-demand orders for 2005.

Among the most popular VOD categories for 2005 was Dating On Demand, which garnered 4.8 million orders.

"[Last year] was a breakthrough year both for Comcast video on demand and for overall trends and shifts in consumer viewing habits," Comcast spokesman Michael Doyle said in a statement. "We knew from the start that if we built and delivered on it, they would come — and last year our customers proved that beyond even our highest expectations."

Comcast has 21.4 million cable customers, 8.1 million high-speed Internet customers and 1.2 million voice customers.
