BEIJING — The Chinese government has shut down 62 porn websites.
According to reports, the Information Office of the State Council has legally closed the sites for disseminating “pornographic pictures, videos and ads.”
The websites were registered in 15 provinces and municipalities and also provided a forum for prostitution and nude video chats.
This is the latest crackdown by China to ban porn in the country. In 2009, the government launched a campaign to take down porn and vulgar content from the Internet, including mobile connections.
The Information Office said its earlier efforts have effectively curbed the proliferation of porn on the web.
"However, the campaign will be a long battle and government agencies will make concerted efforts to attain a clean Internet environment to facilitate the healthy development of adolescents," the office said.
