Android Set to Lead Smartphone Market, Study Says

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — A new report says that Android will take up 38 percent of the global smartphone market by 2016 as the industry doubles in size.

A report by researcher Ovum says smartphones running on Google’s Android operating system will become the dominant platform in the next five years, bypassing Apple by 21 percent, according to ComputerWeekly.com.

"The success of the Android platform is being driven by the sheer number of hardware vendors supporting it at both the high and low ends of the market," said Adam Leach, principal analyst at Ovum.

Ovum's forecast also suggests Microsoft's Windows Phone will overtake Blackberry, with 17.2 percent and 16.5 percent of market share.

Leach adds that a new platform, such as Samsung's Bada, HP's WebOS or Nokia's MeeGo could become a dominant platform by 2016.
