"We do not know the identity of the sports stars or politicians, but they are all high-profile," says TMZ, which earlier broke the story.
The probe initially focused on a ring of hackers obtaining nude photographs of female celebrities such as Vanessa Hudgens, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba and Christina Aguilera.
Other celebrities who are believed to have been targeted include Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Ali Larter and Miley Cyrus. Many of the photos originated via cellphone cameras.
Some reports have connected the purported hacking ring to Josh Holly, whose Tennessee home was raided by the FBI in 2008 after they connected the him to explicit photos of Cyrus. Holly, according to a report, bragged about his celebrity hacking skills in online forums.
Sources told TMZ that the hackers have 100 active email addresses of celebrities and other high-profile people.
Details of the hacking ring came to light after a third set of photographs of Hudgens was published this week.
