Mainstream Report: 'The iPad Is for Porn'

CYBERSPACE — NewTeeVee.com, a website devoted to innovative technology affecting the online video experience, featured an article focusing on the adult industry’s preparedness for tomorrow's arrival of the Apple iPad.

The article titled “The iPad is for Porn” describes the hurdles the industry has had to face in keeping up with the popularity of Apple’s mobile devices, such as Apple’s ban on adult content and its absence of Flash technology.

With their exclusion from the app store, adult websites were forced to embrace HTML5 and H.264 to bypass dependence on Flash technology to participate in the mobile boom — placing them steps ahead of mainstream and very comfortable with their readiness for the iPad.

“The iPad will do for (tablet-based porn viewing) what the iPhone did for mobile device use,” XBIZ President Alec Helmy told reporter Janko Roettgers. “It will take the experience of porn consumption to a new, more natural level.”

The article states that it wasn’t even necessary for VOD leader AEBN to prepare for the iPad launch because its mobile platforms are already compatible with the Apple slate, company spokesperson Suzann Knudsen says.

Gamelink’s director of online sales Jeff Dillon said in the report that 10 to 15 percent of Gamelink’s traffic is now caused by smart phones. His company has more than 15,000 movie titles in stock for iPad users, with 100 new titles being added every new week.

Kink.com’s director of user experience Erik Gibb said that iPad-optimized downloads of the site’s content are already available.

Digital Playground also is ready to welcome iPad users with websites that automatically recognize iPad users and serve up H.264 HD videos.

In the report, Vivid’s Steven Hirsch said his company is currently in the midst of wrapping up the conversion of its entire library to iPad-ready content.

Some companies are exceeding current iPad-friendly technology. Kink’s vice president of technology Stacia Carr said the company is focusing on HTTP-based streaming, which would also work on the iPad. “Enabling streaming support for the iPad just means adopting a technology that we’re excited about for many other reasons.”
