Google Offers Free Ad Posting, New Database

SAN FRANCISCO — Webmasters looking for a quick way to get their information or perhaps a few pictures into Google’s search results need look no further than Google Base.

Launched by Google as a "publicly searchable database" last Wednesday, Google Base allows anyone to post their information and items to the site, including job ads, photos, people profiles, events and activities, services and individual standalone databases. Submitters describe the item they post with attributes, which help people find it when they search via Google.

For webmasters looking to get noticed for a specific project, for example, just upload your picture and your information to Google Base using keywords and your information will start popping up in the search engine instantly.

Users also can use it to advertise retail items, such as lingerie, leathers and logo wear; post events including grand openings, parties and seminars; and list jobs for projects like erotic films, photo shoots and promotional affairs. Because Google acts as the host site, there’s no need to create a new website for information.

Depending on relevance, any item or information posted also may come up in search results in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local, according to the company.

There is currently a limit on the number of pictures allowed for submission, and the site does not support audio or video, but Google representatives said there are plans in the works to build what they call Google Automat, which would help sellers generate additional advertising for their item. Other reports indicate that an online payment system also is in the works, which would allow Google Base to go commercial, potentially competing with sites like eBay, Craigslist and PayPal.
