Websense to Target Mobile Porn

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Porn filtration software developer Websense isn’t content to focus just on office computers. This week the company announced it would be making similar filtration software for cellphones, no doubt prompted by the growth in sites offering mobile pornography.

Working with wireless network developer Nortel Networks, officials at Websense said subscribers to its service would be able to keep pornography, racist content, viruses and spyware off their phones.

“It's a whole new business venture,” said Websense CEO John Carrington.

Carrington made the announcement during a conference call Tuesday, after reporting a 42 percent increase in Websense’s profits for the third quarter, fueled partly by increased subscriptions to its filtration service.

Carrington said Websense would garner at least $2 million in additional revenue in 2006 thanks to the Nortel partnership.

Websense’s software works by classifying sites based on content into 90 separate categories, with headings like “Games,” “Sex,” and “Weapons.” Subscribers to the service choose which categories employees can access.

Carrington said Websense’s software would be used in Nortel’s wireless networks starting in December.

Many adult sites consider mobile porn to be the secret to getting their content into the hands of tech savvy 21-35 year olds. M Squared, one such service recently profiled by XBiz, offers 50 categories of video-on-demand for portable devices, as well as a host of picture downloads. Other mobile services include OhMobile, MobileBabes and Xobile.
