Melissa Stratton and her boyfriend Robby Apples are aspiring actors who move to Hollywood from their small midwestern town of Fish Creek in hopes of making it big. But the longer they're in the big city, the more they discover that all that glitters isn't gold. When Melissa gets cast as an extra on a cheap porn flick, she embraces the role as a way to get their foot in the revolving Hollywood door. Robby, on the other hand, feels like the entire situation is a perversion of the craft they love and begins to question whether or not Melissa is losing her way. Will the young lovers find their footing in the Hollywood rat race, or will the lure of easy porn money turn them into lewd thespians?
Director Mike Quasar is back in the house of Wicked, this time with what may be his funniest movie ever. "So Extra!" is a parody of the porn industry itself, but it's told with love and reverence for the struggle that defines not only the industry as a whole, but also, Quasar's personal experience within it.
This is the first time I've seen Melissa in a starring feature role, and I think she acquits herself quite well. She has a believable naivety that makes her tragic but relatable, while Robby Apple delivers as the lovable straight man who realizes the whole world is upside-down. Tommy Pistol gives one of his best character performances (I love that man), and Seth Gamble follows suit with the absolute best character performance of his career.
Melissa's first day on set sees director Seth forced to step in for the male talent who can't get it up, which places the beautiful Chanel Camryn square in his lap. Yet, her desire to involve Robby leads to an unexpected turn of events when he lands a role in a scene far outside his comfort zone. As Melissa navigates the challenges of the industry, she learns that success in Hollywood often comes with sacrifices and compromises, her to confront the harsh realities of her chosen path.
