Ashley Aoki: From Tumblr to Rising Talent

Ashley Aoki: From Tumblr to Rising Talent

Ashley Aoki discovered that she had an interest in online exhibitionism while attending university. She found she enjoyed sending nudes to guys she was interested in, as well as posting them online for the thrill and fun of it. Eventually, she gathered enough momentum on Tumblr that a lot of people were asking to buy her content. She began selling on Snapchat, joined Reddit — and everything snowballed from there.

Once she finished her degree, she moved out to the West Coast to pursue a career in adult and enjoyed a quick ascent through the ranks of creators, thanks to her steamy videos. As this month’s cover star, Aoki reflects on her path so far, her brand and her goals for 2025.

I don’t use social media very much in my personal life, so it can be hard to remember to stay active on my work accounts.

XBIZ: What were some early lessons that were pivotal for you to learn while you climbed to the next level?

Aoki: Very early on, I had to learn to recognize scams. I did get scammed once or twice during my first few months, so I had to learn to only deliver content/services once I had received payment in full. One time, I was taking an e-gift card as payment for a cam session and the customer sent me screenshots of him sending the gift card to prove that he did pay. I hadn’t received the card, but I felt bad making him wait, so I did the session with him. Turns out the gift card screenshots were fake. So I learned that lesson the hard way.

I also had not taken the necessary steps to protect my identity. I had a lot of people who tried to dox me and blackmail me. Ultimately, I learned to just ignore those people no matter what they were threatening me with.

Another important lesson was ignoring people who say mean things. In the beginning, I would sometimes respond to them, which only urged them on. Nowadays, I just remove the comments if I can, and block them with no interaction whatsoever. I already had pretty thick skin, but I had to reach a whole new level after working in this industry.

XBIZ: How would you describe your overall brand as a creator?

Aoki: I would say I project a sort of “girl next-door” vibe. I don’t specialize in any kinks or fetishes; I kind of cater to everything. Also, I am fairly goofy in real life! So sometimes I try to incorporate that into my content — within reason.

XBIZ: What are your most popular kinds of videos? What can’t your audience get enough of?

Aoki: Boy/girl videos have always been my bestsellers. Of course, I also have a lot of girl/girl and solo videos that do spectacularly well, but I think that a lot of people know me for my B/G content since I did a lot of that in my first few years. I get requests for JOIs, general sexiness — stripteases, masturbation, body worship — as well as role-plays like boss/employee/coworkers, cheating or girlfriend/wife.

XBIZ: Discuss your approach to social media, and how you balance authenticity with promotion.

Aoki: I don’t use social media very much in my personal life, so it can be hard to remember to stay active on my work accounts. When I do go on, I try to remain as authentic as possible, while not sharing too much detail about my private life.

On X, I have found that reposting and commenting on my mutuals’ posts really promotes growth because they do the same for me.

I also try not to make too many advertising posts in a row because I feel that it will turn off my followers. However, I have received feedback from customers that auto-posts for sales do actually encourage them to buy.

XBIZ: Which platforms have proved most valuable to your success?

Aoki: Tumblr was where it all began for me, but Reddit was really where my popularity converted to sales. I amassed large followings across multiple platforms as a result of my Reddit success. I joined clip sites shortly after entering the industry — shoutout to AP Clips! — and those have definitely been crucial.

XBIZ: How do you stay healthy and on top of all your many responsibilities?

Aoki: I love sleeping so I always try to make sure I get enough shut-eye. I’m not the most physically active person nowadays, but I do my best to get my steps in every day, even though sometimes that doesn’t happen. As for my to-do list, posting sticky notes on my computer monitors is what really helps me stay organized!

XBIZ: When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your downtime?

Aoki: I’m a huge foodie! I really enjoy cooking and I love trying new restaurants, especially new cuisines. I have a bit of an addiction to online shopping, and I’ve definitely been giving in to more Black Friday sales than I should. I used to have a horse, and going for a trail ride was one of my favorite things to do. Maybe I’ll get back into it one day. A newer hobby is going to concerts. I became a concert lover recently, so I’m always on the lookout for artists I listen to who are coming to town. In the last few months, I’ve seen Olivia Rodrigo, Fletcher, Suki Waterhouse and Sabrina Carpenter.

XBIZ: What’s next for you in 2025 and beyond?

Aoki: In 2025, I hope to focus more on creating content and getting on cam more regularly. I’d like to improve my work ethic as well. As for my personal life, I’m looking forward to traveling next year and spending time with my loved ones. I’m also planning to take a few classes here and there at a community college for fun.

At the end of the day, I’m very happy with my life and I look forward to the future and continuing to bring joy — and orgasms — to the fans who got me here. I’m eternally grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had in this industry and I hope to stay here for a long time.
