Connection, Self-Care & Safe Spaces: The Keys to Model Mental Health

Connection, Self-Care & Safe Spaces: The Keys to Model Mental Health

Creating content can be exciting, fun and lucrative. However, it can also sometimes be isolating, time-consuming, physically taxing and stressful. Almost all creators will occasionally run into at least some of those issues, so here are some tips that may help when it happens to you.

Make Connections

While the demands of work are never-ending and financial obligations are constantly looming, it’s still vital to prioritize self-care in order to maintain your mental and physical health.

One of the most significant challenges for cam models is feeling isolated due to working from home. At some point, almost everyone struggles with feelings of isolation. Here are several ways to connect with your industry peers:

  • When you find specific creators with whom you align based on their likes, personalities and style, DM them through their cam platforms and start up a conversation.
  • Alternatively, reach out to other like-minded creators through your social media channels, especially if you enjoyed one of their creative projects. Compliments and inspiration are best shared — and maybe they’ll invite you to collaborate on something together.
  • Speaking of collaboration, joining forces with other creators on content, such as videos or livestreams, can be a great way to build relationships and cross-promote each other's work, whether that means you perform together or are just hyping one another.
  • Participate in social media challenges or platform contests. Not only can you possibly win a prize, but it gives you an opportunity to connect with other creators and showcase your work. Look for challenges related to your niche or area of expertise and be active.
  • Attend industry events such as conferences, workshops or even collaboration parties, as they offer a great opportunity to meet other creators and build lasting connections.

Commit to Self-Care

While the demands of work are never-ending and financial obligations are constantly looming, it’s still vital to prioritize self-care in order to maintain your mental and physical health while ensuring long-term financial success. Here are some ways to put self-care into practice:

  • Incorporate time for self-care — and a personal life! — into your schedule. Decide what hours you want to work, and stick to that plan.
  • Practice mindfulness. This is different for everyone but can include taking time for breathing exercises, meditation or yoga to help reduce stress and anxiety. Use apps to guide you through those sessions if that helps you.
  • Take breaks! Go for a quick walk outside, stretch or do something else that relaxes you.
  • Engage in activities you enjoy, such as reading, watching a movie or pursuing a hobby. Remember to prioritize activities that help you disconnect so you can recharge your batteries.
  • Creators who are struggling should also not hesitate to seek help from groups such as Pineapple Support, which provides mental health resources for talent.

Create a Safe Space Online

Remember the value of ensuring a safe space for yourself and for your audience. It's crucial to combat negativity and build a community in which everyone supports each other. Here are a few ways to create a safe space online:

  • Set clear boundaries. Communicate your boundaries to your fans and new viewers, and don't be afraid to enforce them. This may include limits on the type of content you produce, the amount of time you spend on camera and the types of interactions you are willing to have with them.
  • Never disclose your location. Ensure that your whereabouts are never promoted in any assets or during your live shows, even if it’s a seemingly innocuous landmark in the background.
  • If you notice negativity, online bullying or fan-on-fan hate in your chatroom, don’t be afraid to ban folks.
  • “See something, say something.” If you notice behavior that is against community guidelines, or if a viewer is being combative or inappropriate, notify customer support so they can investigate and take necessary action. Other models and fans will benefit too, since this helps ensure a space that is free from such behavior.

It’s not always easy to take care of yourself, especially when work gets hectic. But following these tips will help you stay ahead of the game, so when stresses inevitably arise, you will have the emotional and physical resources to deal with them. Turns out healthy, wealthy and wise really do all go together!
