Many social media platforms are making it next to impossible to post, much less exist as a sex worker. It all can be so discouraging and pretty exhausting. At least there is Reddit, which currently has no immediate desire to de-platform sex workers.
I want to preface this by saying, none of what I say is meant as a way to garner business directly. My hope is to help explain what Reddit is, the basics of how to use it and some tips for becoming a good Redditor that I have come across over the years.
Some of the most successful Redditors that I know post and comment in unrelated subreddits that match their interests.
So, what is Reddit? I’m sure you’ve heard of it. It’s a place for memes and also a place for hobbies. It has its dark bits, but it’s also a great place for nudes, building a fan base and staying connected with them. Everything is divvied up into various categories, or subreddits, where users can post just about anything relevant to the rules set by that subreddit and its moderation team.
What is Karma then, and why do I want it? Karma is fake internet points with no real value aside from bragging rights, but you will accumulate them as you post to different subreddits.
The beauty of Reddit is that there’s practically a subreddit for everything. One for just about every fetish, kink and/or body part. Each subreddit does come with its own set of rules and its own community. Some are welcoming to sex workers as long as you don’t mention that you’re a sex worker.
Others don’t care, some play favorites, and some subreddits should just be avoided altogether. Regardless of any personal views on the subject, it’s important to remember that you’re a guest in their community and should respect their rules. Please remember to read each subreddit’s rules before posting to it if you remember anything from this. Breaking them ends up creating more tension between users and sex workers using Reddit.
With that being said, the most popular form of posting as a sex worker on Reddit is posting sexy photos and GIFs to various subreddits. It’s one of the fastest and most effective ways of exposing yourself literally to new fans. With so many subreddits, it really can be a great way to find people that might be interested in your niche.
I will preface this by saying most Redditors scrolling through these subs might not have any intention of spending money, but to me, that’s okay. I find it similar to most other platforms. Not every person who follows you on Twitter will buy your content, and not everyone that pops into your cam room will tip, but I personally always appreciate having fans to hype me up and engage with my posts.
If “gone wild” style posts really aren’t your thing, there are still hundreds of subreddits you can take part in. Like I mentioned previously, there is a subreddit for just about everything and plenty of places to post that align with your interests, as well as the interests of your fan base.
Additionally, there are subreddits dedicated just to selling online services. Within these designated subreddits, you can post to make yourself available for one-on-one sexting, cam shows, dick pic ratings and much more. Plus, you’re able to limit yourself to whichever kinks and niches you enjoy working with. At times, it can be just as lucrative as any other site.
The verification process to access and participate in some of these subreddits can be a bit daunting, but it can be a nice option whenever you have some downtime. This was actually how I got my start in sex work about five years ago, and I’m super grateful I had a space to grow at my own pace. When I first started, I didn’t show my face, and everything that I posted was shot on my old iPhone 6.
One of the things that I find helpful and similar to other platforms is how important personality is. Some of the most successful Redditors that I know post and comment in unrelated subreddits that match their interests. You can post some memes, give someone advice or even just appreciate someone else’s cool content. I struggle with this at times since I usually prefer to lurk and upvote accordingly. It’s so important for fans to see you as a person and not just present yourself as someone who’s posted the same photo across 10 different subreddits. It can still be very effective, but I want to emphasize the importance of being a good Redditor as part of any marketing strategy.
Reddit definitely isn’t the best site out there, but I wanted to present it as another option. The comments can be really mean on there and sometimes the algorithm just doesn’t work in your favor. One of the hardest parts of being part of the Reddit community is that there is still a large portion of Reddit users that are very anti-sex work. I guess that’s the price for having such a large platform that encompasses so many different ideas and viewpoints.
I try to block all of that out because there really are so many truly amazing Redditors out there that will support you, root for you and upvote you from your early awkward posts to your nomination announcements. If you haven’t used Reddit yet, you should definitely give it a try and spend some quality time on it to see how it can benefit your brand.
