To get an insider’s look at the current state and future trends of the adult job scene, XBIZ caught up with SexyJobs’ CEO Marcel Robins, who discussed the company’s ongoing growth and the employment ecosystem it fosters for both job seekers and employers.
XBIZ: Tell us what inspired the launch of SexyJobs.com.
Robins: Pure necessity! The adult industry has always been treated as the stepchild of the business world. You get rejected almost everywhere, even when you’re a good person who pays their taxes and is trying to offer someone a legit job.
Back in 1998, there were even fewer resources for those advertising adult jobs and trying to cast for their productions and films. It’s not like you could post an ad in Variety for a casting call for porn, and that’s how SexyJobs was born.
XBIZ: Discuss the biggest milestones in SexyJobs’ growth since inception, from both a technological as well as a service standpoint?
Robins: One of our biggest technological milestones happened when we mobile-optimized the site back in 2014. That was a huge step because we have a massive database and a detailed site with lots of moving parts, but we did it and it was a step in the right direction.
The most recent milestone was giving the site a facelift after 21 years. It was about time, so last year we went for it! Our members were very happy and that’s what it’s all about.
From the very beginning, our focus has been on the users of our site and we strive to provide a user-friendly interface that adds value to our customer’s time. We also started to spread out into other countries and that has added even more value for all of our members on a global scale.
XBIZ: How would you characterize today’s adult job market and how has it changed over the years?
Robins: The job market is still doing very well despite COVID-19, especially since the adult job market lends itself to work-from-home jobs more than most other industries, so, SexyJobs has nearly 200 work-from-home opportunities and counting.
Here’s a fun fact: Most phone sex operators have been working from home as far back as the late ‘80s, and in the late ‘90s, cam companies started to come online. Back then, there were more physical studios hiring cam models, but by 2003 and 2004, many companies started to have their talent work from home to save on big overhead costs.
Now, we have a lot of people filming home-grown film content and amateur clips out of their bedrooms. They save on gas in the process, and anything that keeps people off the freeways is always progressive in my book!
XBIZ: What types of jobs are most popular on SexyJobs?
Robins: Film is still the reigning king and Actor/Actress is our biggest category by far. This is followed by the Amateurs category. However, Clip Performers, one of our newest categories, launched with Exotic Dancers, is taking off now. We expect it to eventually surpass many of our other popular categories such as Webcam Models and Fetish Models.
We’re just rolling out our newest category which is not actually offering work, as “Industry Services” makes its debut this summer. We had many people wanting something like this on our site, and so now, they got it! This category is for those not offering a job, but a service to those in the adult industry. It’s very exciting!
XBIZ: What is the ratio of activity on the site between talent opportunities and business/staff recruiting?
Robins: There are more performance-based jobs than anything else, but there are plenty of other job opportunity postings as well. Administrative, tech, social media experts and recruiting positions are the most common non-performance-based jobs. These categories are not necessarily in the adult arena, but are for those “adult-friendly” people out there looking to hire or be hired. As long as the job is legal and we have a place to put it, it works on our site.
XBIZ: What makes SexyJobs.com stand out from other job sites, including mainstream platforms?
Robins: The adult industry is what makes our job site stand out. This is an industry that has embraced us and we love it right back. It’s the mutual respect that we have for the talent and those who are looking for that talent in a non-judgmental and safe place; that’s what sets us apart from those “vanilla” or mainstream job sites.
Back in 2013, The Huffington Post wrote that we were “the Monster.com of the adult entertainment industry” and that’s just fine by us.
XBIZ: Any advice for new users on how to best leverage the site’s features?
Robins: Sexy Jobs is very user-friendly, but I can never emphasize this enough. We encourage all of our new users to check out our FAQ/help section, it’s loaded with helpful information. Also, our search filters can be an amazing asset to help narrow down your search results whether you are seeking talent or looking for a job.
XBIZ: What do you see as the future of the adult job/recruiting market in general?
Robins: Clips and amateur content are going to continue to spike. Homegrown video productions and cams will still do well, but with a new twist. Fansites! Fansites are making new stars out of not just film actors and actresses, but also cam models and other types of performers. The proof is in the amazing payouts some of these people are receiving.
The industry is forever evolving and growing in some very cool ways. We see a bright future coming down the road and we’re excited and proud to be a valuable asset to our community. We’re all fortunate to work in the best industry on the planet and boy do we work hard here at SexyJobs, but we wouldn’t want it any other way. There’s never a dull moment and it’s just so damn fun!
