Q&A: Meana Wolf Is the Alpha of Her XXX Territory

Q&A: Meana Wolf Is the Alpha of Her XXX Territory

Fangs flash with the feral joy of an alpha female biting into her lover, hungry for passionate tenderness, animal lust and soul-satisfyingly authentic empowerment. She is in control, even in absolute surrender. She is in love. And so are her fans.

Meana Wolf is an apex artist who, along with her lifemate Jack, prowls the diversely populated realm of clips, leaping into all that untamed flora and fauna, chasing the trails of paw prints which crisscross the plains before blazing her own bushwhacking path to rich feasts.

This fabulously realized domain of indie studios casting lengthy palm frond shadows over a once traditional market ruled by entrenched kings, over a desert that used to be jealously guarded by staunch sultans, yet now is righteously in the hands of marvelous marauders, rowdy rebels, bawdy brigands and riotous rogues, was unfamiliar to her at first.

Yet she leapt nonetheless into its thickets, bravely scratching her claws on strange trees, testing her own strength against the river rapids of digital media content trends and doing what she and Jack do best, as lovers loyal to one another and loyal to the fans flocking to them, wings beating rapidly as gulls swarming a flood of iridescent snacks skittering, crawling and burrowing into windswept dunes.

Her fur grew sleeker whilst she fed on the ever-sweeter oasis waters of success, their aquatic wealth bubbling up from hidden wells of creativity. Soon enough, this brunette babe, alongside her tall-dark-and-handsome beau, became a top-tier producer of narrative-laced, fantasy-drenched and dreamily lit porn, sharing lovers with one another, in boy-girl-girl and boy-boy-girl threesomes, in all kinds of combinations and dynamics and wondrously libertine sex.

Fire walk with Wolf into the misty woodlands she has claimed for herself, into her colorful den filled with primal illustrations, infused with futuristic cinematography and unforgettable visuals, for this exclusive Clip Star of the Month interview.

XBIZ: What led you to enter the adult industry and team up with Jack?

Wolf: The idea to get into porn started out like all great ideas, in the Orgy Dome at Burning Man. Jack and I were exploring our sexuality and exhibitionism and more than one person commented, “You guys should do porn!” We both kind of liked the idea, so when we got home to Canada, I responded to a Craigslist ad looking for fetish models. That producer introduced me to the world of niche porn and Clips4Sale.

He was so impressed with my ability to pick up the dialogue that he suggested I open up my own studio. I so enjoyed the experience that I thought, “Hey, why not? Perhaps Jack and I could learn to produce videos and hire models to act out some of these interesting niches and fetishes that were so popular on Clips4Sale.”

A few weeks of posting our own ads on Craigslist, and it became clear that there weren’t many other girls like me in my city who were willing to give porn a try. So, we decided to just film ourselves. It was never really my intention to become a well-known porn performer. We said we’d give it six months and if we didn’t get anywhere with it, we’d move on.

In that short time, we became a top-selling studio on Clips4Sale, a feat that can take years of hard work and dedication to accomplish. The support from the community is what grew the studio to where it is today and allowed us to launch our own site MeanaWolf.com.

XBIZ: Talk about the biggest ways your clips have evolved since your first productions, in terms of technology, technique and content.

Wolf: Both Jack and I had a lot of learning to do. Neither of us was familiar with operating cameras, lighting, editing and sound engineering … none of it. The only thing we had going for us in the beginning was our willingness to learn, and our borderline neurotic perfectionism.

Jack would be researching how to use our newly purchased $500 camera, and I would be researching hair fetishes or foot jobs or what made a certain performer so special. We lived in a 200 sq. ft. apartment back then and sometimes I look back at those old clips and cringe. Everything was wrong. The set was terrible, the lights looked awful, my makeup looked awful … but somehow, early on, I was able to convey a sincerity in my performing and an unwavering commitment to the scene that resonated with the fans.

We’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars upgrading our lighting and camera equipment since, some of which Jack has personally customized to capture our ultra smooth POV footage. We’ve also moved into a new home studio. But most of all we’ve learned what the fans like. Everything we do is geared toward making sure they have an amazing experience watching our clips, from start to finish. That means I’m consciously thinking about every detail of the story, thinking about what they would like to see, hear and feel at every stage of producing a scene. And we never ever release a scene we’re not proud of. The fans deserve more than that.

XBIZ: How do you balance your personal and professional life?

Wolf: Running your own clip studio and website takes a lot of work and it can be challenging especially if you have a high standard for how you want your work to be presented. As a result we, like many other mom and pop studios, spend most of our waking hours devoted to our business. It can be all-consuming, but having a product that we’re proud of is so important to us.

I wish I could say we had diligent “work hours” and boundaries as to when we turn it all off, but unfortunately that’s just not the case. But the three things that keep us going are: We listen to a 15-minute guided meditation each morning, we always make time to decompress at the end of the night and watch a TV show or a movie, and we always fall asleep saying “I love you.”

XBIZ: Discuss your strategy for marketing content, keeping fans updated and engaged.

Wolf: When we first started out, I noticed that there were very few studios that put in the effort to create their own previews, gifs and cover images. From day one, we decided that it was imperative that we were always transparent with our customers.

The general public consensus is that“porn is free,” and to me, expecting customers to pay $20 for one clip without at least seeing a preview, or getting a decent idea about what they’re going to see, is not doing right by them. So we put a lot of effort into our previews and gifs. My marketing strategy has always been show them how good it is and the work will speak for itself.

Seeing all that great footage up front on Twitter and our website is a huge draw for new customers, and ultimately they stick around because unlike the blockbusters you see on the big screen, the previews are just as good as the movies themselves.

XBIZ: Share your approach to filming with other talent and ensuring everything goes smoothly, before, during and after a shoot.

Wolf: Filming with talent is very new to our studio. It can be isolating working with just the two of us, so filming with more experienced performers brings a lot of excitement to the workflow. As a female producer, I believe that the performers deserve the utmost respect. No matter what, I guarantee a safe and comfortable work environment. Wherever possible, I try to do my research before booking a model. I like to get an idea of what their strengths are and cater my clip writing to them, and I communicate the general story ideas in advance for their approval. Some models prefer not to act in certain types of roles and that’s more than okay. My job as a producer is to make their workday a fun one, so if they’re not into something, I’ll write something else for them.

Being versatile and creative is a huge asset when working with talent as well. Sometimes no matter what was originally agreed upon, our bodies physically can’t accommodate what we’d all like, so being quick to work around whatever limitations a model might have makes them feel safe. I do believe that a model should never feel pressured to do an act that she’s not comfortable with and I’d much rather amend my needs for the scene than put another performer in pain or discomfort of any kind.

The rest is all common sense or at least I hope it is; talk about consent, feed them well, keep them hydrated and don’t nickel and dime them on their scene rates.

XBIZ: Tell us about MeanaWolf.com and your future plans with the site.

Wolf: MeanaWolf.com is the culmination of a lot of blood sweat and tears. For years, the fans have been begging for a subscription site, but both Jack and I worried that we couldn’t keep up with the demand of putting out great content every single week. We’ve grown a lot and learned a lot, and last year we doubled our output, so we knew that we were ready. We spent a lot of time customizing the new site to our standards, so fans get a clean and elegant interface with all of our clips. The response has been unbelievable.

I think the future for the studio is absolutely bright. The more I work with other people and try new things, the more I expand creatively and my vision is to keep that momentum going forward. I feel intensely proud of the work we’re putting out every day and I’ve got some really incredible new guests and exciting projects planned for the future.

XBIZ: What other adult industry creators inspire you, either through your own work or their personalities?

Wolf: The one name that comes to mind instantly is Kayden Kross. I feel like she is taking the art form to an entirely new level with Deeper.com. For her, it’s not enough to capture a great sex scene or indulge her viewers in a great script, she’s further raising the bar by diving into visual story-telling and subtext more akin to true filmmaking. The result is cinematic, immersive and surreal. It is very difficult to draw viewers into a scene and Kayden always executes this perfectly.

Beyond that, I admire many of my peers in the industry for many reasons. I love seeing so many women take control of their businesses and their brands through their own content creation and monetization. It’s an incredible time to be a creator in the adult space as it feels like anything is possible. Every day I’m so impressed and inspired by these women.

XBIZ: How would you define the “Meana Wolf” brand, as far as your overall aesthetic, vibe and dynamic?

Wolf: My goal is to bring the fantasy to life … real life. So most of my scenes happen in real-life spaces. Every detail is considered — from the set and lighting, to the position of the microphones — we make every effort to create a seamless immersive experience for the fans. Often, our scenes are created without cuts, or contain very well-hidden ones so as not to interrupt the viewers’ reality. I’ve tried to dial it back in the past, but I’m just not satisfied unless I know I did everything I could to make it look just right, to make it look real. One of my favorite compliments that I get regularly comes from women and couples who enjoy watching my videos. They love the roleplay and character work that I do, because in my scenes, regardless of who is doing what, the woman is always in control. Context is everything. I take great care creating characters and narratives that parlay this idea to the viewer … that I’m not an object, I’m a woman with my own complex emotions and motivations that drive my sexuality. When I take them on this sensual journey, they empathize with those motivations. The result is an intensely immersive experience for the viewers in which they feel the seduction in every word and every glance.

XBIZ: As part of a duo, how do you share responsibilities with Jack when it comes to content and performing?

Wolf: In life, Jack and I tend to gravitate towards our personal strengths. He’s very technical, disciplined and diligent, whereas I’m more creative and chaotic. The same goes for work. I come up with all the scenes and write the scripts and Jack handles the technical details. Often, I’ll approach him with a new Idea for a particular shot or concept and he’ll initially think it can’t be done, but he can’t resist the challenge and will find a way to shoot pretty much whatever I want by MacGyver-ing some new piece of equipment.

We share editing responsibilities as well, where he will do the more technical elements of fixing audio, key framing and lighting issues, and making GIFs, while I’ll do our special effects or make the previews, because I’m more connected to the stories and the dialogue.

We love spending time with each other and where many couples feel like they’d kill each other if they worked this much together, we find it to be very harmonious. All in all, the job has brought a lot of strength to our relationship and we are constantly learning and bettering ourselves together, as we rise to the day-to-day challenges of the work.

XBIZ: Any major ambitions for the coming year?

Wolf: Right now, more than anything, I want to direct from behind the scenes. There is something so uniquely satisfying about seeing your vision come alive on the screen, and working with new people and new equipment has given me a surge of creative energy. I’ve come to really love making these little movies and the more work I put into them, the more rewarding it is and the more I want to push myself to create something even bigger and better.

The whole cycle from writing to storyboarding, filming to editing is absolutely addicting and as hard as that process is, I really love it. The fans love my performing, yes, but they also love my artistic vision and the way I tell an erotic story. They are always in the back of my mind and I know they’re going to love these new projects that I have coming for them. Not to worry though, I’ll stay performing as long as they keep watching. With that being said, I want to continue bringing the fans incredible erotica for the coming year and many years to come. Thank you so much XBIZ!
