WIA Profile: Joy King

What is your role and responsibility at Wicked Pictures?

My role within the company and specifically as it applies to our web division has changed often over my 11 years with the company. At this point I work with Avi Bitton, our CTO in developing our expansive database as it applies to our many departments. I also have a hand in creating promotions, defining content and maintaining our brand through the site.

Give us a typical Monday at your desk?

I don't think my Monday's are typical, but here's an example of a recent one. As my title suggests, I work on projects, which usually consists of several different ones at any given time. The first thing I do in the morning is make a list of all of my goals, work related and personal, so I can stay focused on accomplishing them. I keep my list in my wallet so I have it with me all day. Then I answer email return calls, the usual. This past Monday I was working our company Holiday party, several special projects and a new line of 16 hour compilations that we will be releasing after the first of the year. First, the holiday party. After meeting with Steve Orenstein, the President of Wicked, I confirmed the details with the event coordinator, I faxed contracts and worked on the guest list and invitation. Special Projects. These are time consuming and tough to describe, but I basically watch movies, create edit notes, pull visuals, do compliance paperwork and coordinate materials for the final product. I guess compilations are very similar so ditto that. Of course this doesn't factor in any meetings or watching our standard release schedule, but you get the point.

What do you think is your greatest challenge or asset being a woman in the adult industry?

I think the greatest challenge is also the best asset. Just being a woman, period.

What strategies do you use to maintain balance in your life?

I'm a huge believer it mediation. I also strive to find reasons to be happy and not look for the reasons to be unhappy. I think it's important to clearly define your goals and stay focused. Exercise and eating a healthy diet are also important in feeling good and staying happy.

What advice would you give other women who want to enter your field?

Focus, drive, intelligence and ambition don't hurt, but make sure you're coming into this business with both eyes wide open. Don't let anyone offend you, and when I say that I mean, don't take anything anyone says personally, even if that's how they mean it. Have confidence in what you're doing and saying. Know exactly what you're trying to accomplish in everything you do. Maintain a good sense of humor and laugh often. Having goals is the most important thing you can do for your success in business and in life. One of the best pieces of advice I got was from a book. It said, if you want something, write it down. Now it's a goal. Until you write it down, it's just a dream.
