Tech Tracker: Mindflex Reads Your Mind

Keyboards and mice will one day be as quaint as an abacus and quill pen, and it all started with a series of games designed to focus and harness the power of the user’s mind.

“Have you ever dreamed of moving an object with the power of your mind?” asks the creators of Mindflex Games (www.mindflexgames.com), stating that “Mindflex makes that dream a reality!”

One of the entrants in the mind-controlled game arena, the object of Mindflex is to quickly navigate a ball through a customizable obstacle course.

“Utilizing advanced Mindflex technology, the wireless headset reads your brainwave activity,” states the company website. “Concentrate ... and the ball rises on a cushion of air! Relax ... and the ball descends. It’s literally mind over matter!”

“Whenever you concentrate, you generate brainwave activity. Mindflex uses a variation of EEG technology to ‘read’ the intensity of these brainwaves via sensors positioned on your forehead and ears. These sensors do not generate or interfere with brainwaves; they only read what is already there,” adds the website. “Once the Mindflex headset recognizes your brainwaves, it transmits a signal to a fan within the console. This fan controls ball levitation. Your brainwaves, in turn, control the power of the fan.”

The Mindflex website offers several video clips demonstrating the process.

Believe it or not, the computer mouse is now 42 years old — and a lot of technology has come our way since, so that in the not-too-distant future, we may indeed see the hand movements of the mouse replaced by the very thoughts that would move your hand in the first place — making “hands free” control a technology of interest to adult webmasters.
