Tool Tip: HiTask

Two of the most daunting tasks for webmasters are time management and task scheduling — and while planning your day more carefully won't add any more hours to it, this level of formal preparation is an infinitely helpful aid to productivity and for simply keeping track of everything.

While some old-school operators are happy to use clipboards and whiteboards, post-it notes, calendars and bits of scrap paper; or worse, mysteriously named text documents cluttering up their computer desktop; software solutions exist to take on the management and assignation of tasks.

One task that is begging for a proper way to handle it is the ongoing development and maintenance of a website; where any number of tasks from bug fixes to feature rollouts to content updates needs to be prioritized and scheduled — and then possibly assigned to another team member to handle; with some means of monitoring and accountability for the task's completion.

Many solutions exist, but are often either too complex or not robust enough; leaving the search for the perfect app an ongoing one — with the latest candidate being HiTask, which its creators call "a simple and free web-based task management application suitable for keeping personal to-do lists, and managing your team or project."

Currently available in three versions; free, premium and business, HiTask is scalable for use by solo operators and larger teams alike.

Boasting the "coolest online to-do list," HiTask allows users to plan their day with easy to use drag-n-drop controls that allow exchanging of tasks with other users and more. Claiming to be the easiest groupware on the market, HiTask can allow team-wide task sharing and is customizable with the user's logo and domain name.

Different grouping options and color tags make reviewing tasks quick and easy; and they can be dragged-and-dropped to the calendar or assigned to other team-mates. The use of the iCalendar protocol allows for instant synchronization of data with other systems, and for easy exporting to programs like Excel and Outlook, OpenOffice iCal, and Mail.

HiTask can be accessed from anywhere, using a mobile phone and is iPhone compatible.
