Congressional Panel to Look at Porn Addiction

WASHINGTON — Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas), who has been on the conservative forefront in battles against obscenity, has called a hearing on Capitol Hill that is focused on why people get addicted to pornography.

Brownback decided to look into the subject after viewing a news report about hotels making money from guests watching adult movies, among other reasons. The focus is the neurology and psychology behind the addiction.

The hearing will be Thursday in a subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee.

Staunch conservative Brownback earlier this year helped widen and politicize a campaign to clean up the nation’s airwaves by advocating indecency fines against broadcasters and others.

“Americans, especially parents, are fed up with content producers and broadcasters who have for too long ignored regulations that are designed to keep a standard of decency and protect children on the public’s airwaves,” Brownback said earlier this year during Federal Communications Commission hearings after the Janet Jackson “Nipplegate” brouhaha.

The eight-year senator also has convened numerous hearings over obscenity issues and has encouraged increased corporate responsibility among the entertainment, as well as waged a war combating entertainment obscenity and violence.
