Merged XM, Sirius to Offer A La Carte Programming

NEW YORK — Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio have announced that the merged company will offer programming to consumers on an a la carte basis, with subscribers opting in on individual program channels. These new options are in addition to current subscription plans: Current Sirius and XM subscribers can maintain their current plans at the same monthly rate and continue to use their current radios.

The new plans include 50 Sirius or 50 XM channels for $6.95 per month, 100 channels selected from both services for $14.95 per month, and family-friendly packages for $11.95 per month from one service or $14.99 per month from both services.

There are eight proposed new programming plans, which will be filed with the FCC on Tuesday. "Premium" channels, as yet undefined, will be available for added fees of $3 or $6.

Playboy Radio, currently an opt-in feature on Sirius, was previously a subscription service on XM.

"It was very profitable on XM," Playboy Radio Program Director Farrell Hirsch told XBIZ. "The merger hasn't been approved, and if it is approved we don't know what form it'll take. We were told by the people at Sirius that after the merger, we'll be doing business the same way. The guys at Sirius have been good business partners, and I take them at their word. If they come up with a new system, maybe the new system will be better.

"There is so much going on, between the FCC and the Department of Justice and Congress and the two companies, that we don't know what's going to happen. I can tell you this: There will be a way to get Howard Stern," Hirsch said.

Additional details on the merger and programming options are available at SiriusMerger.com and XMMerger.com.
