Celebrity Sex Tape Trend Reaches Vietnam

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam — Authorities are investigating the former boyfriend of music and film star Dinh Thoai Yen Vy to determine whether he secretly taped the couple having sex and then distributed the video over the Internet without Yen Vy’s consent. The video clip was first discovered online. Soon after, copies of the clip burned onto CDs began popping up on Ho Chi Minh City’s black market, setting off a major scandal in Vietnam. Yen Vy told police she was unaware that her ex-boyfriend, Phan Thanh Tong, had taped her having sex from 1999 until 2001, and that she tried to break off the relationship when she found out, but Tong threatened to sell the tapes if she left him. She also insisted that she never gave Tong permission to distribute the video over the Internet. Police initially arrested Tong March 15 on charges of embezzlement and paper forgeries in relation to his car dealership but used the opportunity to try to determine if he was responsible for illegally posting the sex video on the web. “We first opened an inquiry into Tong’s counterfeiting activities, before focusing on his role in the film to see who launched the scenes of debauchery on the Internet,” an investigator told reporters. Tong told police that Yen Vy knew he had filmed their intimate moments from the beginning, but he did not intend for the video to reach the Internet. He said he loaned the tape to a friend, who then passed the tape on to another individual, and that he was as surprised as anyone when the video turned up online. Police questioned both Tong and Yen Vy for eight hours Wednesday to try to determine if the singer and actress actually had prior knowledge of the recording. Several other Vietnamese models and actresses have made similar claims in recent years but later exposed for having been involved in the stunts to help further their careers. During questioning, Yen Vy insisted she did not know Tong was recording their sexual encounters until 2001, two years into the relationship, and that he used the tapes to “force me not to leave him as I repeatedly said I wanted to break up with him.” “He said if I leave him, he would circulate the clips to destroy my life and career,” Yen Vy said, adding that Tong frequently beat her.
