“Our entire line is going to be converted over. Everything that we manufacture here in North Hollywood will be converted to include Sil-A-Gel additive,” Doc Johnson Director of Product Development and Licensing Chad Braverman told XBIZ.
Sil-A-Gel, which is a proprietary ingredient, contains properties that are non-toxic, anti-bacterial, latex and cadmium free and anti-microbial. The additive is softly scented and helps to prevent the spread of bacteria.
Braverman points out that it’s important to understand that Sil-A-Gel is an ingredient and not an actual material. Also, the components used in Sil-A-Gel have all been FDA-approved.
“The main thing to remember is that Sil-A-Gel is not a material; it is an additive. The best way to explain it is that anti-bacterial soap is not the soap. It’s the stuff in the soap that makes it anti-bacterial,” Braverman said.
Because it takes up to two years from the beginning of the development phase before a product actually goes live, Braverman says the idea for Sil-A-Gel pre-dates highly publicized concerns about hygiene and safety in connection with sex toys.
“We’re constantly with our material vendor looking to update and improve upon the materials that we use,” he said. “So this happened to be a good timing issue between the Sil-A-Gel and the hysteria concerning safe sex toys.”
The Radiant Gem collection of 14 novelty products, launched in 2006, was the first Doc Johnson line to feature the use of Sil-A-Gel.
Doc Johnson will introduce its new catalog at next week's Adult Novelty Expo. A legend in the front of the catalog illustrates what products are made out of and will include information about Sil-A-Gel.
All new packaging for the Doc Johnson product lines will also bear the Sil-A-Gel logo.
“It’s something that will be letting all of our customers know that all our products will contain Sil-A-Gel,” Braverman said. “We continue to move in the right direction in our product development as well as in addressing consumers’ concerns.”
