The new partnership, formed with British cable provider ntl, will allow roughly 1.4 million digital cable subscribers across the UK to access Playboy’s library of adult programming.
“We are very excited to be part of this latest development in the UK Digital TV market,” said Jeremy Yates, managing director of Playboy TV UK.
Packaged as part of ntl’s new “ntl On Demand” service, subscribers will be able to access 50 hours of Playboy content.
“With one of the most diverse libraries, we are perfectly positioned for the VOD market and can finally offer the consumer the ability to take control of what they want to watch when they want to watch [it],” Yates said.
Ntl On Demand launched on Wednesday in Glasgow, Scotland and will be introduced regionally across the UK in the coming months, according to ntl.
The service is ntl’s £40 million bid to knock UK-based company British Sky Broadcasting off the VOD market throne. The service, which doesn’t require any type of equipment upgrades, can be accessed from a customer’s normal program schedule. Some content will be offered for free on the service and movies may cost up to £3.50.
“Ntl On Demand is an exclusive service for our digital TV customers and is another example of where we are adding choice and value,” said David Thatcher, managing director of sales and marketing for ntl. “Playboy TV is a world-famous brand, and we welcome them to the new service.”
The BBC and children’s programming network Nickelodeon have also both signed up to supply content to ntl.
