Flynt made the comment on July 19 during a radio interview on KPCC, a Pasadena-based National Public Radio station in the L.A. area.
Flynt appeared on KPCC’s “Air Talk” program to ballyhoo his new book, “Sex, Lies, and Politics: The Naked Truth.”
The free speech advocate told host Larry Mantle, “I look for hypocritical politicians who have a public life that is opposite from their private life.”
Flynt cited Georgia’s former Congressman Bob Barr, who opposed women’s reproductive rights – although Barr’s wife had an abortion in 1963 that he did not oppose and allegedly paid for with a personal check.
“That scumbag doesn’t belong in office,” Flynt grumbled on the live call-in show.
Flynt went on to discuss allegations that before George W. Bush became president, his then-girlfriend had an abortion in 1971. However, the publisher said that Hustler was unable to “nail down” the story, and therefore did not publish an expose regarding the charge.
The muckraker claimed that the woman in question disappeared and went from a job earning $13,000 per year to living in a half million dollar home in Corpus Christi, Texas.
When Mantle asked Flynt about his born again Christian experiences with ex-president Jimmy Carter’s evangelical sister, Ruth Carter, Flynt quipped, “I’m thankful I got out of that… I sought counseling and found out that I was bipolar. I suggest that born again Christians take lithium.”
Ever the iconoclast, Flynt added, “I see people making lots of bad decisions because they’re ‘talking to god.’ George Bush is one of them.”
The Hustler magnate also warned that if the Republicans are reelected in November, “When [Attorney General John] Ashcroft and Bush finish their little wars, they’ll go domestically after the adult industry.”
