Editors Michael Stabile and Jack Shamama attribute the success of the blog to a steady mixture of the topical and the titillating. “Working in the industry, we are surrounded by gay porn. So it’s hard to look at Vin Diesel and not think of Dredd Scott,” says Stabile, former editor of Metropolitan Magazine. “Porn is pop.”
Little over a year since its launch, the blog has slowly drawn attention of both industry players and porn fanatics. Even stars themselves turn up on the comment boards, with Grabby Best Actor Michael Soldier leading the pack. “It’s a hoot!” said Soldier, shortly after editor Jack Shamama published a highly flattering puff piece on the media-addicted drag queen trannyrocker.
“We try to be our own target audience,” explains Shamama, former adult media buyer and editor of Sex Scene for Gay.com. “Of course, it means we spend all our free time doing market research.”
Gay Porn Blog first grew under former editor for Nakedsword, Mark Kliem who first began managing the industry and entertainment journal in April 2003. In the two months since, Stabile and Shamama have helmed the rag, traffic has surged.
Google has always fascinated Stabile, who did much of his previous editorial work in the keyword-heavy travel and beauty industries. “I thought - at the time – this is sh-t work! Now we’re laughing all the way to the bank.”
