LOS ANGELES — Dr. Oliver Carter has released a new book on the British porn industry of the '60s and ’70s, titled “Under the Counter.”
In the book, Carter, a professor of Creative Economies at Birmingham City University, explores how corrupt police officers, organized gangs and the BBC contributed to the early, underground porn industry in Britain.
“This fascinating account offers impressive detail and opens up a history of alternative sexual economies beyond the too-familiar tales of Soho and the Swinging Sixties,” said Professor Clarissa Smith of Northumbria University. “Combining exhaustive research into archives, court records and reportage alongside interviews with key-but-forgotten figures, Oliver Carter explores the cultural shifts which both facilitated and obstructed development of the British porn industries in the second half of the 20th Century.”
