Sen. Rick Scott's GOP Platform Proposes Return to 'Obscenity' Prosecutions

WASHINGTON — Florida Senator Rick Scott’s proposal for the first new Republican Party platform since 2014 includes a section claiming there is an “explosion of pornography” and that a GOP administration “must defend the American family from societal elements that erode it” by reviving federal obscenity prosecutions.

Scott’s 31-page document, which he calls “An 11-Point Plan to Rescue America,” was unveiled late last month. It presents a nightmarish view of American society beset by a litany of dramatic scenarios and social ills — including “pornography,” which he calls “trash.”

The document's preamble states Scott's belief that “the militant Left now controls the entire federal government, the news media, academia, Hollywood and most corporate boardrooms — but they want more. The are redefining America and silencing their opponents.”

Among the things “they” plan to change or destroy, Scott lists: "American history, patriotism, border security, the nuclear family, gender, traditional morality, capitalism, fiscal responsibility, opportunity, rugged individualism, Judeo-Christian values, dissent, free speech, color blindness, law enforcement, religious liberty, parental involvement in public schools and private ownership of firearms."

Sen. Rick Scott on "Family" and "Obscenity"

Among Scott's 11 points, No. 8 defines what the Florida Senator believes should be the GOP’s stated stance regarding “Family.” It is in this section that Scott advocates for the revival of federal obscenity prosecutions to combat “pornography.”

In a lengthy series of pronouncements — which also include a mandate that “no federal program or tax laws will reward people for being unmarried” — Senator Scott proposes that the GOP declare that “the nuclear family is crucial to civilization, it is God’s design for humanity and it must be protected and celebrated. To say otherwise is to deny science. The fanatical Left seeks to devalue and redefine the traditional family, as they undermine parents and attempt to replace them with government programs.”

Scott's proposed GOP platform section on obscenity reads:

We must defend the American family from societal elements that erode it.

We must enforce existing federal obscenity laws. Our society has almost given up on demanding decency, we must aim higher.

We must protect our children from the explosion of pornography and cyber predators.

The FCC must hold online platforms and broadband providers accountable for not adequately providing tools for parents to keep this trash out of their homes.

McConnell to Scott: Proposal Could Lead to 'Unnecessary' Attacks

After issuing his proposal for a GOP platform earlier this month, Scott was rebuked by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), the architect of the post-2016 Republican Party policy of not having a written platform that could be criticized by opponents, the public and the press.

McConnell and Senate Republicans, according to Beltway insider news site Politico, warned Scott that “his agenda for the GOP could expose the party to unnecessary attacks this fall, a significant intra-party rebuke of the Floridian.”

“The Senate minority leader, who has declined thus far to release a party agenda, advised Scott at a GOP leadership meeting on Monday afternoon that his 11-point proposal gave Democrats ammunition for millions of dollars of ads in the midterms, according to multiple people briefed on the exchange,” Politico explained.
