LOS ANGELES — Jessica Drake was featured as a guest speaker discussing pornography and "shame-free sex education" with Professor David Frederick's UCLA Human Sexuality class. The virtual event, followed a week of lectures and readings about porn’s impact on U.S. culture.
Prior to Drake’s appearance as guest speaker, the students learned about various facets of pornography in society. They also examined references in both academic journals and media that were both for and against porn to formulate their own opinion, which was used as the basis for a short essay with academic sources.
“Coming into the Q&A portion of my guest appearance, students had already formulated a lot of very interesting and educated opinions on the industry based on what they had read and watched,” said Drake. “Few students have the privilege to arrive in higher learning with a foundation of consensual, shame-free sex education.”
"It was rewarding to be able to add a wealth of context and comprehension for his students," she continued. "Each time I have spoken at universities, it’s always such a different experience. Not only do the attendees learn from me, I certainly learn from them as well.”
An In-Demand Speaker
Drake is a regular speaker in Professor Frederick’s Human Sexuality classes at UCLA and Chapman University. While the free-flowing format is difficult to replicate virtually, Frederick, along with moderators, were able to field live questions from the students.
Frederick stated that Drake's guest lecture is "an important part" of his human sexuality course.
"From my lectures, students learn what correlational and experimental studies say about how people use pornography and the effects of pornography," he said. "Jessica provides them with an insider’s perspective and how someone in the industry thinks about the relationship between pornography and feminism."
Frederick added that Drake “also brings needed attention to important topics in sexual health. She discusses how to negotiate consent a partner, promotes behaviors that enhance sexual health and protections against STIs and how to maintain a positive sex life.”
“She is a very engaging and interactive presenter,” he said, “answering any questions students have for her. Year after year, students unanimously say that her presentation was very informative and that I should invite her back so that future classes can benefit from hearing her perspectives.”
