LAS VEGAS — CWC Corp., parent company of GayVM.com, has announced the release of six limited-edition prints by the reclusive, influential gay artist known as "Rex." The newly launched GayVM offers rare and vintage gay magazines, paperbacks and prints.
"GayVM is proud to present for sale unique prints from the icon Rex. The artist, now in his late 70s, continues to focus on his art, including new pieces, and remastering his other images. Rex has released six remastered favorite pieces from within his collection spanning over 40 years of art," a rep explained.
"The ability to find any Rex original, or even a print, is near-impossible today. Hoarded and kept in private collections from the '60s, [they] seldom come on the market. When they reach the selling block, the art pieces sell quickly, many times exceeding the original estimate," said the rep.
The "distinctively unique" black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings by Rex quickly became synonymous with the emerging gay and leather scene in '60s and '70s and remained popular throughout the '80s and beyond, influencing several generations of gay filmmakers and artists, among them Robert Mapplethorpe.
"All of us at CWC and GayVM are excited to be working with world-renowned artist and icon REX," said Lee Watson, president of CWC. "We feel it is a great honor and privilege to be helping to bring his amazing art into focus for the benefit of today's generation to enjoy. We could not be happier or more pleased to be providing some of the very best gay art prints for our customers to experience and collect. We are always working tirelessly to enhance our catalog of art and print we offer our valued customers. REX's iconic limited edition prints and detailed imagery is any gay art collectors dream come true."
The prints were released today and will be available until supplies last.
