LOS ANGELES — "Charity porn," the seemingly new phenomenon born in the wake of the massive Australian wildfires, was recently examined by InsideHook.com
The trend appears to have been launched by model Kaylen Ward, earning her the nickname of the "Naked Philanthropist." Ward raised over $1 million dollars for disaster aid for Australia by offering to send nude pictures of herself in exchange for proof-of-donation. Since then, not only has the model launched a new campaign with OnlyFans to help with Puerto Rican earthquake relief, but a score of similar campaigns have ensued.
Ward, however, has pushed back on the idea that she invented the notion of "charity porn."
Indeed, the tradition of calendars featuring naked pictures for charitable causes go back decades. And the Playboy Mansion was a "coveted destination for benefits and fundraisers hosted by even the most 'buttoned-down' of charitable foundations," notes InsideHook.
But the reach of the online age has made the ability to solicit donations from massive numbers of people located all over the world in a short amount of time has taken off.
Pornhub has been raising money for causes like ocean pollution and saving bee populations since at least 2012.
The past month, however, has demonstrated the appeal of a single individual offering to trade naked snaps or vids for charitable donations.
Besides the money Ward has raised, fellow model Jenna Lee has raised over $60,000 herself through a similar offer.
"I take climate change very seriously which is why I felt the need to participate in this specific campaign," said Lee
Meanwhile, adult superstar Riley Reid offered to send personalized photos and videos to anyone who could prove they'd donated to the Australian relief effort. Her tweet has since received over 15,000 likes and nearly 2,000 retweets.
