LOS ANGELES — So, what will reshape the adult entertainment industry in 2019?
xHamster thinks it knows. The adult site said that a massive rise in viewership by women, coupled by dramatic uptick in global censorship will reshape the biz in 2019 and beyond.
Today, xHamster released its “Trend Report” on the adult industry. The adult entertainment company sifted through data from nearly 15 billion visits to understand ways in which the industry is changing, for both producers and consumers.
“From Stormy Daniels to SESTA/FOSTA, 2018 was a watershed year for porn,” the “Trend Report” said. “But for all the attention paid — and in some cases, attacks lobbed — consumers are just starting to feel the effects.”
xHamster Vice President Alex Hawkins said the industry is in the midst of a global realignment in how porn is made, produced, consumed and distributed. Among the conclusions of the report:
- Women will make up over 30 percent of adult consumers worldwide in 2019;
- Global censorship efforts are threatening to constricting adult business in ways previously unimagined;
- As sites disappear and demographics shift, millennials are finally comprehending paying for porn; and,
- Barcelona is set to overtake Los Angeles and Miami as a global porn capital.
"This is a watershed year for both the business and the consumer," Hawkins said. "In 2019, we will see many of the trends of the past few years — rising women, increased censorship, aging millennials and shifting international politics — finally have an effect on the porn industry. For the past decade, we've been in a sort of holding pattern, but we see the dams breaking this year."
xHamster, in particular, noted that women all over the world are accessing porn in much larger numbers. Its “Porn for Women" category itself saw a 284 percent hike in viewers.
