MONTREAL – Cherie DeVille and Kenna James anchor the first episode of “Girlcore,” a new lesbian anthology series from Gamma Films’ imprint AdultTime and filmmaker Bree Mills.
“The six-part original series pays homage to the 1980s, and classic pulp fiction, and is going to be offered to all the members within AdultTime, which will include all of Girlsway’s members, as well as being launched as Girlcore.com to attract new audiences into our ecosystem,” said Mills, also Gamma Films’ head of production.
DeVille and James, with Domenec Kane in a nonsex role, anchor “A Delicate Vice,” which is the first episode.
The second episode is titled “The Go Girls” with Carter Cruise, Ryan Keely, Abigail Mac and Scarlett Sage, while “The Third Way,” the third episode, features Alexis Fawx and April O’Neil.
Ep. 4, “Lesbian Twins,” toplines Shyla Jennings, Jenna Sativa and Kristen Scott, with cameos from Tommy Gunn and Chanel Preston; ep. 5, “Strange Nurses,” features Casey Calvert, Sarah Vandella and Whitney Wright, with a cameo by Ryan Keely; ep. 6, “Private School,” toplines Bobby Dylan, Georgia Jones and Emily Willis.
“The first season of the series gives a nod to the cinematic works of the time period, with each scene edited in widescreen format with a dreamy ‘80s synth soundtrack courtesy of Canadian artist Pilotpriest,” a rep said.
“This is a series that’s been about six months in the making,” Mills said. “I drew my inspiration from a genre of pulp fiction that was very popular in the ‘50s and ‘60s — it’s often been dubbed ‘sexploitation literature’ or lesbian pulp novels. For a whole generation of people, it was the only representation that existed out there for what being a gay person was.”
Mills drew on “everything that I love about women: their sexuality, their style, and even not sugarcoating away from some of the struggles that we face,” she said. “This whole series is quite personal to me. It kind of encompasses everything that I love.”
She assembled “an all-star cast – the best of the best – to tell these stories. I love the ‘80s - I wanted to re-imagine lesbian pulp novels with an all-star cast, with high-production values, in the ‘80s, and that is what we’ve brought together — the world of Girlcore.”
Individual episodes can be viewed and downloaded at Girlcore.com, which are available to members of “one of Gamma Films’ network of websites,” the rep said. Interested affiliates may contact Derrick Gilbert at derrick@famedollars.com.
