NEW YORK — What a delight! For the return of HBO's “The Deuce,” now in its second season, xHamster has created an interactive map showing off New York City's Times Square in 1977.
The embeddable map features the theaters, live shows and bookstores that made Times Square sexy. Users can check out where porn landmarks like Show World Center, Venus Theater, the Adonis and the New Mature once stood.
It locates more than 50 theaters — straight and gay — with photos, ads, historical details and information about their eventual fate.
xHamster researchers pulled information everywhere from the New York Times archives and sites like Vanishing New York to old copies of Playboy and Screw.
"Times Square in the 1970s was an analog version of online porn today," says Alex Hawkins, xHamser’s vice president. "You had nearly limitless options and a community of like-minded fans.
“We're debt to those who came before us, and took risks to develop the industry that exists today. We wanted to excavate today's Disney-fied Times Square, to show the world that existed and thrived four decades ago."
