Verisign: Domain Name Registration Boom Continues

RESTON, Va. — Verisign Inc., in its quarterly industry brief delivered this week, said that domain name registration continues on a booming pace.

While Verisign doesn’t break down by category, including adult entertainment, stats released showed that the second quarter closed with approximately 339.8 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains, an increase of approximately 6 million domain name registrations, or 1.8 percent, compared to the first quarter of 2018.

Domain name registrations increased by about 7.9 million, or 2.4 percent, year over year. The .com and .net TLDs had a combined total of about 149.7 million domain name registrations in the domain name base at the end of the second quarter, an increase of approximately 1.4 million domain name registrations, or 0.9 percent, compared to the first quarter.

The .com and .net TLDs had a combined increase of about 5.3 million domain name registrations, or 3.7 percent, year over year.

The .com domain name base totaled about 135.6 million domain name registrations at the end of June, while the .net domain name base totaled approximately 14.1 million domain name registrations.

New .com and .net domain name registrations totaled about 9.6 million at the end of the second quarter, up compared to 9.2 million domain name registrations for the second quarter of 2017.

Total new gTLD domain name registrations were about 21.8 million at the end of the second quarter of 2018, an increase of approximately 1.6 million domain name registrations, or 7.9 percent, compared to the first quarter of 2018.
