The Thai Rebuke Mobile Porn

BANGKOK, Thailand – Adding to the Thai Government's ongoing struggle to regulate the amount porn that ends up in its citizen's hands, the latest anti-porn campaign in this southeastern region is to prosecute mobile porn content providers.

Under the new government order, mobile porn providers could face up to three years in prison if caught making or distributing pornography for download.

Known for its world-renowned adult entertainment industry, the Thai Government has been cracking down on all things related to porn in an effort to restore traditional cultural Thai values.

The Thai Government is also cracking down on specific Thai fashions, which it is calling "Un-Thai," and nightclubs are being asked to close two hours earlier than previous 'last call' laws permitted.

The latest porn-curbing plan will be implemented by the Culture Ministry, the Associated Press (AP) reports, and will include legal action against companies that provide porn content to mobile users. Mobile porn access is reportedly a favorite pastime for Thai citizens, despite the fact that porn distribution is illegal.

"Pictures on mobile phones that show people having sex and such are illegal pornography," a representative for the Culture Ministry said. "This is wrong, whether it is for commercial purposes, distribution or just publicizing."

Earlier this month the Thai Government instated a national database that would reduce the risk of having children exposed to pornographic websites. The government initiative will also include the release of a filtering software called 'Black Bin' aimed at blocking porn websites that run operations out of Thailand.

According to the Culture Ministry, the new filtering software will upload porn site URLs into a national database as often as every two or three months.
