Scott Stapp, Red Light District Settle Suit Over Sex Tape

LOS ANGELES — Former Creed frontman Scott Stapp has settled his invasion of privacy lawsuit against Red Light District over the release of a sex tape starring himself, Kid Rock and four groupies that was filmed aboard a tour bus in 1999.

Stapp accused Red Light District of illegally selling downloads of his videotaped debauchery on the websites ScottStappSexTape.com and KidRockSexTape.com. Kid Rock won a preliminary injunction against RLD from distributing the tape on its websites in February 2006.

Stapp charged RLD with invasion of privacy and misappropriation of likeness in the suit that was scheduled to begin next week.

Stapp was seeking damages for “loss of reputation, embarrassment, pain and suffering and emotional distress” by having the tape leaked on the Internet.

Stapp’s attorney refused to comment about the terms of the settlement, saying only that the suit was resolved “in Scott Stapp’s favor,” to E! Online.

Under the settlement, Red Light District has agreed to halt any further distribution of the tape.

Stapp claimed in his suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, that the video was stolen from a safe in his house by someone out to harm his solo career. Red Light District Owner David Joseph previously said that he got the tape from a third party.

Kid Rock placed the blame on Stapp for the tape’s dissemination, telling the Associated Press, “[Stapp] is the idiot because it’s out. I’m holding him responsible.”

A call to Red Light District seeking comment was not returned before press time.
