LOS ANGELES — Adult film performers will be sharing their stories of “coming out” about their work in the porn industry at two upcoming book events in Los Angeles.
The free book readings, spurred by Jiz Lee’s “Coming Out Like a Porn Star” book, will be held at Stories Books & Cafe in Echo Park on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. and at the CatalystCon convention on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 12:30 p.m.
Lee, a genderqueer porn performer who has worked in the biz for about a decade and edited the book, is a driving force behind Pink & White Productions, including CrashPadSeries.com, PinkLabel.tv, and fundraised for LGBTQ and sex worker-focused organizations through the erotic philanthropic art project Karma Pervs.
In 2007, Lee in 2007 began a blog to chronicle performer adventures in the adult industry. She debuted “Coming Out Like a Porn Star” last October.
With the book, Lee offers personal stories from more than 50 porn professionals who “came out” — or chose not to — to family, friends and lovers.
Adult stars Nina Hartley, Venus Lux and Milcah Halili will offer readings at the Stories Books & Cafe event in Echo Park.
At CatalystCon (at the Westin Los Angeles), adult stars Joanna Angel, Casey Calvert and Jack HammerXL will offer readings. A signing will follow the panel, welcoming additional contributors Jackie Strano, Shar Rednour and Andre Shakti.
“The pivotal anthology reveals the stigma of having been involved in porn as workers’ largest obstacle, resulting in discrimination in housing, finances, custody battles and more,” Lee said. “Contributing authors and guests will read from their essays and share their experiences in these unique and powerful literary events.”
