NAPLES, Italy — The Italian edition of Playboy this month has something special in store for readers: It offers the first transgender to pose on its cover
The Italian edition, which continues to offer nudity unlike U.S. issues, honored transgender award-winning actress Vittoria Schisano, who transitioned five years ago at the age of 27 after starring in such TV miniseries as “My Son.”
"Being on the cover today, after having been able to realize the dream of becoming physically a woman, takes on a double meaning for me. It's not a scalpel to make you woman, you are first in your soul," Schisano told La Repubblica.
February’s Italian Playboy also features a spread that includes Pamela Anderson and articles on Quentin Tarantino and David Bowie.
While it’s the first time a transgender has appeared on the Italian edition of Playboy as a cover girl, it’s not a first for the brand. Transgender former English model Caroline Cossey appeared twice in the U.S. edition — first in 1981 and again in 1991.
