BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo man who claimed he had inside connections into the adult entertainment biz was convicted of wire fraud last week and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Federal prosecutors said that 37-year-old John Northrop, who called himself the “Porn King,” posted classified advertisements on Craigslist and Backpage.com, offering, among other things, fraudulent employment opportunities in behind-the-scenes work in the adult film industry.
He solicited drivers willing to transport women working in the porn biz in a fictitious, company-owned Cadillac Escalade.
Interested applicants were later instructed to wire a one-time deposit to Northrop, Federal prosecutors said.
In total, more than 250 people from across the U.S. and Canada wired over $65,000 to Northrup over 14 months between March 2010 and June 2011, authorities said.
Northrop was sentenced last week by U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny.
