LOS ANGELES — HBO has ordered a drama pilot about the early porn biz called "The Deuce," which now has James Franco attached as the star.
According to a Variety report, the period drama about the tumultuous rise of the porn industry in New York during the ’70s and ’80s, now has Franco lined up to not only star, but also executive produce. Michelle MacLaren, who directed 11 episodes of “Breaking Bad” from 2009-13, will direct, the report said.
The project is partly inspired by the career of twin brothers who were players in the Times Square world, according to Variety. Franco will play both twins.
David Simon, the creator of "The Wire" and "Treme," is developing the series along with his frequent collaborator George Pelecanos.
Franco is no stranger to working with porn-related material. His Rabbit Bandini Productions produced the documentary about Kink.com that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013 before having a limited theatrical release last summer and arriving on Netflix in April.
