FastCompany.com Spotlights VR Porn Development

LOS ANGELES — The mainstreaming of virtual reality technology is opening a door for entrepreneurs and industry veterans to experiment with new ways of producing porn, FastCompany.com reports.

In an article titled "VR Porn is Coming, With or Without Silicon Valley," Whitney Mallett writes that even though the form and the technology is still in its early stages, "the porn producers of the future are here."

She reports that VR porn for the still-in-development Oculus Rift and Samsung's Milk VR platform is already for sale on dozens of websites.

Still, lots of obstacles remain such as Silicon Valley welcoming Porn Valley applications. She noted the SXSW panel called "The Future of Porn is 3D Virtual Reality" that was presented by XBIZ founder and publisher, Alec Helmy, and Utherverse CEO Brian Shuster in which one male audience member lamented his own struggle trying to get the two industries to talk to each other.

"From his experience in L.A.’s startup community, he said, there’s seems to 'still be a taboo to talk about tech and porn,'" she reported.

Helmy said venture capital for VR is being dedicated to the gaming industry and cinematic experiences.

"The traditional methods of funding for startups tends to be unavailable to any type of adult entertainment business because it comes with a certain risk," Helmy told FastCompany.com.

At SXSW, Shuster said, "The future is upon us. ... We’ve spent the last 10 years thinking about and preparing for virtual reality entertainment."
