Controversial Gay Hookup Site Refuses to Go Away

TORONTO — Squirt.org has announced its latest ad campaign, which includes a new billboard along a major American highway.

Squirt.org is an international gay adult dating / cruising site operated by Pink Triangle Press since 1999.

In November, Squirt.org’s “Non-Stop Hookups” bus advertising campaign stirred up the local community in Miami, resulting in vandalism and eventual removal by the City of Miami. Pink Triangle Press (PTP) then mobilized the gay community and started a petition on Change.org to have the city allow the ads.

Recently Outfront Media reached out to PTP about reinstating the campaign with a new creative, which launched on May 4, on the I-95 highway en route from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. The ad campaign reportedly went through a rigorous approval process, where even the user names displayed on the phone screen had to be adjusted.

“We are excited to have our campaign back in the Miami / Fort Lauderdale area. We worked very hard to get our ads reinstated,” says PTP’s Digital Business Director Attila Szatmari. “Ad equality is very important and we are excited that ads targeting the gay community are back in the streets with other ads where they belong. We also worked very closely with Outfront to create a less suggestive but still sexy ad that would not offend the local community.”

After the controversy in Florida and most recently in Dallas, Squirt.org launched its ad campaign targeting racism in online dating in the metro Chicago area on May 4. With important events like International Mr. Leather and The Grabby Awards, Chicago is the centre of attention of the gay community in May, and is the perfect place to continue the campaign.

“The attention Chicago gets in May and its diverse community makes Chicago the perfect continuation to spread our inclusive message,” Szatmari added.
