LOS ANGELES — L.A.’s own Cinefamily is getting “artcore” this weekend with three nights of erotic, out-there programming, “Sexperiments: A Collection of Turned-On Cinema.”
Tonight kicks off at 8 p.m. with “Sexperiments: A Collection of Turned-On Shorts" featuring Andy Warhol’s Factory protégée Barabara Rubin’s “Christmas on Earth,” with a live score by Portland, Oregon’s White Rainbow.
Cinefamily describes the event, “As constraints on representing sexuality were loosened for mainstream films starting in the late 60’s (a la ‘Midnight Cowboy,’ ‘A Clockwork Orange’), so were the shackles around experimental artists, who were finally freed to fearlessly explore and blow minds with alternate views on the love act (or ‘amourous congress,’ as they used to say in olden times.)
"The filmmakers selected for tonight’s shorts compilation — including luminaries like Gunvor Nelson, Constance Beeson, Paul Sherits, and animators like Vince Collins — employed a myriad of styles, from strobic overstimulation (‘Peace Mandala’) and haunting meditations on the human form (‘The Operation’), to freaked-out comics of morphing genitalia (‘Desire Pie’)."
Saturday and Sunday bring a honed focus to the twisted adult films of Stephen Sayadian, who will be present at Saturday’s screening of “Café Flesh,” along with the film’s co-writer, Jerry Stahl. Described by the Cinefamily as a “visionary maker of the most unusual adult cinema ever lensed in 35mm,” Sayadian is hailed for his surreal and nightmarish style — Sunday’s film, “Nightdreams,” is perhaps best remembered for its anatomically incorrectly correct Cream of Wheat box.
“Our Sexperiments weekend’s resident professor Stephen Sayadian (director of ‘Café Flesh’) co-wrote and produced ‘Nightdreams’ after years of working for Larry Flynt’s Hustler empire, and while he was enjoying a successful career designing the poster art for era-defining films like ‘Body Double,’ so that should give you some idea as to the boundary-less imagination on display,” Cinefamily explains on its website.
