NEW YORK — Porn legend Annie Sprinkle — dubbed as “one of the godmothers of feminist porn” — was the subject of a story in the U.K.'s The Independent.
Sprinkle said that feminist porn is not only about feminism — but pleasure as well.
The 59 year-old’s adult career was chronicled, noting the earning of her PhD in human sexuality (the first adult perfromer to do so), and the making of “Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle” in 1981 after lamenting about what she didn’t like about the porn being made for men.
“I started looking and criticizing what I didn’t like about it. And I thought ‘if we don’t like that, let’s make something we do like,’” Sprinkle said.
Fast-forward 30 years and the rise of the Internet, and a new feminist porn movement was spawned thanks to efforts like Sprinkle’s, the article pointed out.
The former adult star’s 40 year career taught her that there is common between the pro-porn and anti-porn camps.
“Feminist porn is very political because sex is very political,” Sprinkle said. “But we want to make the world safer, more educated, more aware of rape, more aware of abuse and exploitation, too.”
