LOS ANGELES — XBIZ will examine the factors affecting modern-day porn and what they mean to consumers and industry professionals alike in a special seminar at the XBIZ 360 Adult Film Conference next week.
Titled “Porn Disrupted: The Politics of Changing Sexual Attitudes,” an eclectic group of adult industry activists, producers and academics will meet from 12 to 12:50 p.m. on Thursday in the Great Room 2 at the W Hollywood Hotel to dissect the topic.
The confirmed speakers include: Dr. Carol Queen, an author and founding director of the Center for Sex & Culture; Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals, a sociologist specializing in gender and sexuality; Shine Louise-Houston, a pioneering producer and director of Pink & White Productions; Ben Tao, the founder of Offbeatr.com, an adult industry crowd-funding site; and Colin Rowntree, the owner of BDSM hub Wasteland.com. Jiz Lee, a genderqueer porn performer and writer, will moderate the session.
“In the absence of comprehensive sex education, people use porn to learn about sex—what sex looks like, who gets to have it, and what it means to be sexy,” Lee said. “On its own, that's fine. But a limited example of what porn is has the danger in dictating what's 'normal,’ raising issues in our understanding of sexual health, and also our sexual psyche. Diversity in porn lets us find ourselves in the erotic landscape, proving we are all capable and deserving of love."
Louise-Houston remarked, “I believe there's a lot of room and need to create adult content that's real, that's respectful and powerful... I think it's the perfect place to become political. It's a place where money, sex, media and ethics converge.”
This candid discussion is designed to deconstruct the perceptions of real-world sex created by modern-day porn in what is shaping up to be one of the conference’s most unique sessions about the emergence of sex-positive alternatives to other offerings that reinforce the male-dominated stereotypes that often define mainstream porn.
