The new owner of DVDs For A Buck Pamela Butkowski is fresh to the adult industry. She said that when she discovered the program was for sale, she saw the opportunity to phase into adult and build upon the site’s “club” concept.
“I had been looking into getting into the business for a few years, but didn’t want to be a content producer,” Butkowski told XBIZ. “I have a strong background in distribution and marketing and wanted to do something that was in that area. The deal went down like any other business sale — very traditional.”
DVDsForABuck.com’s movie club is based on the Colombia House or BMG programs that rose to popularity in the mid-1990s, but with no minimum purchase requirements or contracts. DVDsForABuck.com gives customers five adult DVDs for $1 as a bonus for becoming a member. Each month of the $34.95 membership entitles the customer to select up to two DVDs with free shipping and handling.
“The program has a lot of positives and the concept has been around for years,” Butkowski said. “There is a very large market for DVDs. I would like to grow the program and attract the people out there who either don’t have a local adult store that they can buy from, are too embarrassed to go to the store, or who just prefer to shop online. There is also a large segment of the customer base that likes to collect porn. Our program is a great way for people to add to their collections.”
The company also offers a program for gay porn fans, GayDVDsForABuck.com. Both programs offer thousands of DVDs from many adult studios, including Sin City, Hustler, Private and Acid Rain on the straight side, while the gay program features DVDs from Bacchus, Vivid Man and Puppy Productions.
New features for version 2.0 of DVDsForABuck.com come mostly for members, which include new search capabilities and special offers. Butkowski has created new banner ads to aid in affiliates’ promotion of the program.
The program pays webmasters $25 - $30 per signup with a 10 percent referral fee.
